Injury Lawyer Serving Boulder, Longmont, Broomfield & Surrounding Areas in Colorado
Driving a motor vehicle is a serious responsibility. A slight mistake, lapse in judgement or error can catastrophically injure or kill the bicyclists, pedestrians and other motorists with whom you share the road. As an experienced accident attorney, Christopher Jeffress has worked with many injured cyclists in Boulder. Our avid cycling community is pretty good about sharing the road, but sometimes accidents happen as the result of a motorist’s negligence or reckless endangerment.
Andrew Bernstein, whose bicycle accident case is being handled by Mr. Jeffress, is on a long path to recovery. He was severely and near fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident in Boulder in July, 2019. Mr. Bernstein was hit by a white van while biking home from Erie. When Mr. Bernstein regained consciousness, the motorist and the van were not at the scene. Thankfully, a passerby found Mr. Bernstein and called 911. Doctors and hospital staff were able to save his life, although he suffered spinal cord injury, internal trauma and fractures. He has come a very long way in his recovery but still experiences pain and partial paralysis. As of now, the Colorado State Patrol has identified the vehicle that likely hit Mr. Bernstein, but they have yet to identify the driver or arrest anyone in connection with the hit and run.
In an apparent response to COVID-19 stay at home orders and public transportation restrictions, shoppers are buying up bicycles across the country. In some places, it’s difficult to buy a new bike if you want one because the demand is so great. At the same time, the weather is becoming warm, sunny and pleasant. These two factors come together to suggest more cyclists will be hitting the road across Colorado. As motorists who care about preventing injuries, we can do our part to prevent bicycle accidents and the horrible injuries they cause:
- Never drive distracted. Put your cell phone away for the duration of the trip.
- Keep your eyes, hands and mind on the task of driving. Daydreaming or staring out the side window can be just as dangerous as texting and driving.
- Don’t ever drink and drive.
- Get plenty of rest and don’t drive if you’re tired.
